An open letter to prospective clients:

We like all potential clients to know that we are selective about who we represent. The material must be tight, salable and on a professional level.

We also like to inform writers up front that although we don't charge a reading fee, IF we accept them on as a client there is an annual contract fee of $450.00.

This covers submissions, follow-ups, telephone calls, emails, contract negotiations (in the event of a sale) and all other aspects of representation. Although a sale is never a guarantee, the agency does its best to obtain one. Each client receives quarterly reports (Jan., April, July and Oct.) which informs them of what submissions and actions have been done on their behalf.

On many occasions, we've been questioned regarding websites that clients have seen that taboo up-front fees. The sites state that it is not standard practice for an agency to charge. What they don't mention is the fact that most agents that don't charge belong to organizations such as the AAR and Writer's Guild. These organizations forbid fees. In addition, these agents will not take on new writers who are not already best sellers. The reason? There is little effort to pitch an established author, whereas pitching an unknown to a paranoid industry takes much more effort, time and money.

In essence, it is in fact a standard practice and quite necessary for an agency to charge some type of fee when taking on an unknown author. If they didn't, they would not stay in business.

We like to advise potential clients of these facts and our fee so that there are no misunderstandings and no games. If you have any questions, we invite you to ask.

Sincerely,

Mocknick Productions Literary Agency, Inc.
